Would you like to help people in your community during the COVID-19 crisis? We've launched Corona Helpers, a new website where individuals can pledge their support and COVID-19 support groups can recruit and manage volunteers. Visit www.corona-helpers.co.uk. This means that we may take a little longer to reply to contact requests about opportunities that are not related to COVID-19 support, so please bear with us and thank you for your patience.

Tea Party Host

Name: Tea Party Host
Organisation: Re-engage
Location: C/o Spark, Unit 5, Houndstone Business Park, Yeovil, Somerset, BA22 8WA
Type: Full Time

Host a tea party for isolated and lonely over 75's and their volunteer drivers - once or twice a year on a Sunday afternoon. You will provide a warm welcome, a friendly atmosphere and a simple afternoon tea with sandwiches and a few cakes for the older members and the volunteers. They need a downstairs toilet, few or no steps and seating for 5 or more older people. These groups are a lifeline of friendship for older, isolated people. Each older member is assigned a volunteer driver and together they become part of a small group invited to a volunteer host's home for tea. They visit a different host each month, but the group remains the same and relationships grow. We are recruiting in South Somerset, but particularly looking for volunteers to support the Somerton and Langport group.

Organisation Description

The problem
Over 1.4 million older people in the UK suffer from loneliness. Half a million of them say they go five or six days without seeing or speaking to anyone.

Our impact
We’re the only charity solely committed to tackling this problem by helping older people to re-engage with their communities through regular face-to-face contact, giving them a lifeline of friendship.

How we do it
At Re-engage, we work within your local community to set up regular social gatherings for small groups of people over 75, on their own, and hoping to find new ways to get out and about that suit them at this time of life.
