Would you like to help people in your community during the COVID-19 crisis? We've launched Corona Helpers, a new website where individuals can pledge their support and COVID-19 support groups can recruit and manage volunteers. Visit www.corona-helpers.co.uk. This means that we may take a little longer to reply to contact requests about opportunities that are not related to COVID-19 support, so please bear with us and thank you for your patience.

Adopt a Path and TrailWatcher Volunteer - various locations across Somerset

Somerset County Council

Name: Adopt a Path and TrailWatcher Volunteer - various locations across Somerset
Organisation: Somerset County Council
Location: c/o Central Volunteer Team, c/o Spark, Ilminster, TA19 9PY
Type: Part Time
The role is flexible and can fit around your schedule. You can increase or decrease your adopted paths to fit your time commitment. There may also be the opportunity to join other volunteers depending on existing volunteer coverage in your chosen area.

Description

If you love getting out and about and being active in the Somerset countryside then this is the role for you! As a Rights of Way volunteer, you will ‘adopt’ a path or paths to walk. You will regularly (3 or 4 times per year) carry out light cutting back of vegetation from around signposts, gates and styles as well as reporting any problems encountered on local rights of way to the Rights of Way team. This role can fit around you and your schedule and could even be combined with walking the dog! The trail watcher scheme is very similar to the adopt a path scheme but on one of our five promoted routes and includes assisting in an annual survey of the chosen trail. Our fantastic Rights of Way Volunteers make it possible for people to continue to enjoy the Somerset countryside and access rights of way.

Being a Rights of Way volunteer is great for those who love the outdoors and have a keen eye. All you need is enthusiasm and the ability to use secateurs! When you sign up to volunteer with Rights of Way you will receive a digital map of the paths that you can adopt. After choosing your path or paths you will then need to complete a brief induction and will be provided with the equipment required to undertake the role.
Whether you adopt a path or volunteer as a trail watcher your role will be to:
Regularly (3-4 times per year) walk your adopted path(s)
Carry out regular light cutting back of vegetation from around gates, stiles, bridges, way mark posts and signposts, etc.
Promote responsible use of the public rights of way network through observing the Countryside Code
Via Explore Somerset report to Somerset’s Rights of Way Team any problems encountered on local rights of way
Record the hours you spend volunteering
You will be able to access full support and guidance from the Volunteer and Trails Officer or Area Warden. You will also receive the rights of way volunteer newsletter three times a year.
