|Name:||Bath and West Gold Residential Volunteer - Duke of Edinburgh's Award|
|Organisation:||Somerset County Council|
|Location:||Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, BA4 6QN|
The event runs from 26th – 30th May 2020. We would like Overnight Volunteers to do a 48 hour stint, and day volunteers to do full days.
Would you like to help support young people to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh Gold award? If so, we need your help!
The Gold Residential is a 5 day, 4 night stay at the Bath and West for approx. 15-20 young people aged between 16-24. They must fulfil a residential to complete their Gold Award, with people that they have not met before. The young people volunteer at the Bath and West helping to set up stalls and working with other people at the show who need an extra pair of hands. The residential takes place between 26th – 30th May 2020 and offers overnight opportunities (of up to 48 hours) or day volunteer work on the stand.
We need both day and overnight volunteers.
The overnight adult volunteers will be involved in:
Our staff help make sure the young people are in the right place at the right time. We are due to help at two main areas in 2020 as well as running our own interactive stand. Our main volunteering areas will be The Pilton music tent and the Sports Village, although we may be asked to help elsewhere as needed. Everyone just needs to be in the right place at the right time. As a leader you won’t need to work in the areas, just make sure the young people are where they should be. You will help man the walkie talkies and keep in touch with the young people
The Young People are aged from 16 – 24. This is often their first experience of an event like this. A friendly face and a good listener is often all that it takes to help make any issues disappear. There is no doubt that it is a long, hard week for them but they gain friends for life and experience many things. Tiredness contributes to frustration – so empathy and compassion are key.
The Volunteer would work alongside other volunteers and a member of staff from Support Services for Education Outdoors, and the young people. They will be based on site at the Bath and West show and be expected to walk around the site as necessary to check on the young people. When on the stand they would be expected to get involved in promoting Duke of Edinburgh and Support Services for Education outdoors, alongside being involved in the fun activities that are run.
Day time volunteers would be involved in the stand only, as above.
Volunteers are a crucial part of our work in communities.
